The fishes metabolism and body temperature is completely controlled by their environment. The colder the water is the slower their metabolism is and the warmer the water is their metabolism increases. There are several ways to heat your tank. One is an under gravel mat. This heats up under the gravel making the water on the bottom rise as it gets hotter creating a cycle. Many of these heaters are controlled by a thermostat which rises the temperature when cold and stays off when too hot. Another source of heat is the submersible glass tube heater. This is probably the most popular choice. The optimum temperature to keep your tank at is 25 degrees Celsius or (77 degrees F). Make sure your water circulation is efficient so that there are no cool spots in your tank. Other parts of the tank may heat up the water such as, lighting, pumps, filters, Sterilizers, etc. Make sure that your temperature is stable at all times. Chillers are used to control the temperature when they rise dangerously high. Chillers are used when there is very hot weather during most of the year. Basically chillers are the exact opposite of heaters to keep water temperatures stable if too hot.

Things to do if the heater fails to work On :

-Float bags of hot water on top

-find another heater to use

-Make sure water circulation is efficient to circulate heat

-check if the heater is plugged in

Things to do if the heater failed to work Off :

-unplug the heater

-Floats bags of ice

-Blow fans across the water surface

-water circulation has to be efficient

-do a water change with a slightly lower temperature

-use a chiller
